What’s Hot in Bedding?

I don’t know about you, but I think there is nothing more delicious than relaxing in the comfort of a sumptuously soft bed outfitted in fabrics that speak to your body and soul. Today’s fashions offer a plethora of ways to celebrate the boudoir with style and comfort. The Patterson Group recently launched a custom bedding division where you can find the latest on what’s hot in the bedroom. (We keep it rated PG, so relax!)  Here are a few of our findings.

Linen is Luscious
Linen is perhaps the hottest fabric in bedding today. If you think that linen is all about formality and wrinkles, you need to take a closer look at this fabulous fabric to appreciate its many assets. Why do I love linen? Let me count the ways:
  •  Linen is extremely versatile. It works as well in a formal setting as an informal one and adds both texture and depth.
  •  Linen is amazingly absorbent. You’ll be hard pressed to find a fabric that is as consistently cool and crisp.
  •  Linen is a wonderful backdrop for color. Colors are more vibrant on linen than on most fabrics.
  •  Linen loves being laundered. The more you launder linen, the softer it becomes. Try to find a more comfortable fabric than linen after it’s been through the cycle a few times. Like a fine wine, linen gets better with age. (Laundry tip: Take your linens out of the dryer while they are slightly damp for ultimate care. They will dry smoother and last longer.)

The Coverlet is Making a Comeback
Move over duvet, the coverlet is making a comeback. The old style coverlet has returned to vogue, adding interest and ease to your bedding ensemble. Whether you want to toss a coverlet over a sheet or blanket or fold a blanket over the coverlet, it adds a welcome casual and contemporary touch. Unlike the traditional woolen coverlets one thinks of from the colonial era, today’s coverlets are available in a variety of fabrics that are soft and brimming with creative design options.
The coverlet’s lightweight material makes it a dream for layering and creates a clean and contemporary profile for your bedroom. The vintage appeal of coverlets is ageless, which is why you will be seeing many more cropping up this year.
Mixing Textures and Colors is Magic
Thank goodness the days of matching and rules are part of design history. What could be less creative and interesting than having everything match perfectly and not be infused with your personality? Perhaps the most exciting element of today’s style is that freedom has made its way into the bedroom. Being able to mix colors, textures, fabrics, and styles allows you to put your personal stamp on every design element of your bedroom from pillow shams to fabric fillings. What a dream to be able to design your own private oasis surrounded by things that you love to touch, see, and behold. Jettison the rule book and embrace our tips on how to create your personal stamp in the bedroom (in keeping with our PG protocol).
  • The best place to launch your design dreams is your bed. It is the biggest element in the room and should be the catalyst to create the color palette and personality of the room.
  • Mix textures to create tactile and aesthetic interest. Deliciously smooth bamboo pillowcases will make you want to place your head on them every night and the fun nubby shams that somehow jumped into your arms and onto your bed are OK to use. You can rest assured that there’s room for all.
  • Invite your favorite colors into your bedroom.  Let go andcelebrate more than one color in your bedroom. Go ahead and mix light blue with beige or toss in a citrus throw just for fun. The design police are too busy rounding up the real criminals (you know, the ones that are still matching) to care about your creative expression.

Bottom line: It’s your life and your bedroom so why not have it tell your story? It’s the one place where you can shut out the world and revive your body and soul each and every night. Surround yourself with your favorite colors, textures, fabrics, and furnishings. What could be better than falling asleep to chase your dreams and waking up surrounded by them.
